SETUP & SUPPORT
Your first rewrite starts here.
Get SmartKeyboard ready, try a short draft, and find help if something doesn’t work.
Check compatibility first
SmartKeyboard requires iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later. Free on-device writing requires Apple Intelligence to be supported, enabled, and available on your device. Check Apple’s current device, language, and region requirements. Wait for any required model downloads to finish before trying a rewrite.
1. Add SmartKeyboard
Open iOS Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard, then select SmartKeyboard. Return to the app and follow its setup instructions.
2. Try a short message
Use the app’s Test screen, or open a supported field in Mail or Notes. Touch and hold the globe key to switch to SmartKeyboard. Select a short draft and choose a writing action. Review the result before sending.
3. Make a prompt your own
Open Prompts in the app and create a custom prompt. Try: “Rewrite this as a polite client follow-up. Keep it brief and make the next step clear.” Free includes one custom prompt; Basic and Pro include unlimited custom prompts.
Using OpenAI or Gemini
Cloud providers require Basic or Pro, your own provider API key, an internet connection, and Full Access for network requests. Add the key in the app’s provider settings. Any provider usage charges are separate from your subscription.
The keyboard doesn’t appear
Check that SmartKeyboard is listed in iOS Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. Try switching with the globe key in Notes. Password fields and some apps do not allow third-party keyboards.
A rewrite fails or misses some text
Try a shorter selection. iOS limits the text available to keyboard extensions. For on-device AI, check Apple Intelligence availability. For cloud AI, check Full Access, internet connectivity, and your provider key and account.
Manage your subscription
Open iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions → SmartKeyboard to manage or cancel your plan. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
